Two beauties from Dlugosza Street

There is almost no snow in Nowy Sacz. We hope to present today the last snowy photos in this year:)
We are on Dlugosza Street again. In the foreground of today's upper photo there is the house which you could see few days ago. Some of you were interested in how does the house look like inside. It may be difficult to find an answer because there is a dental cabinet and it is not the office of our dentist:)
The second building which you can see in today's photos is also really nice. There was a children's home (probably) and after that a kindergarten. Nowadays it seems to be that the kindergarten moved or was closed. On the building there is no the red information board, which was there in the past...
We will keep track the condition of this house:)

This is the statue of Wladyslaw Jagiello - the Polish king from the XV century. He laid the foundation for the centuries-long Polish-Lithuanian Union. He run the war with the Teutonic Order - Jagiello together with the Lithuanian army defeated the enemy during the Grunwald's battle in 1410 (this date is remembered by every Pole). This statue was founded in 500 anniversary of this event.
This sculpture is situated of course on Jagiellonska Street:)

The black cat on the roof

This house - with such unusual decoration like you can see in our today's photos - is located on Dlugosza Street (near 'Planty' Park). The building is the residence of the art gallery.
To be honest, it's not very easy to notice this black cat on the chimney. So when you will get by this building, don't forget to glimpse on its roof:)

The Roman element

Yesterday was very sunny Sunday so we went for a walk (we took a camera of course:)) These are two of our shots.

This tenement is situated on Jagiellonska Street - the main street of Nowy Sacz. This street consists of two parts. The first one is open for car traffic, the second one is purposed only for pedestrian traffic, so called 'deptak' (which you can see here). This building is located at the open for car traffic part of Jagiellonska Street. The building is the office of a bank (many banks in Nowy Sacz are located in beautiful tenements:)). On the top of the roof of this building there are sculptures which resemble to some Roman carvings.

The look from the birds' perspective

In today's photo there is the view on the central part of Nowy Sacz from the tenth floor of one of the high-rise blocks in 'Barskie' housing estate. You can see in it the contours of the Saint Margaret Church and the townhall.
At the bottom of the photo there are typical communist houses which were built in Poland in 1960s. and 1970s. It was very simple and rather ugly architecture. Fortunately, communism collapsed in our region of Central and Eastern Europe 20 years ago and such buildings are just an ephemeral relics of the past:)

Charm of the wooden details

This is one of the most beautiful houses in our town (in our opinion:)) It is situated on Długosza Street (the name of the street comes from the Polish historian from the XV century). As you can see, the house is in the very good condition. It was renovated few years ago.

The Saint Margaret's church

This is the Saint Margaret's church. We realised that you have seen the spires of it on our photos (here and here) but you haven't seen the whole church yet.
This church was built in the half of the XIV century but it did not look like nowadays. It was frequently rebuilt (new naves and other elements were added). The last rebuilding took place in 1969-1973.
The church is situated in the centre of the town.

The railway plough

During the winter not only roads and pavements should be plowed but also the railway track. In today's photo there is a railway plough which removes the snow from the track near to the Nowy Sacz's railway station. In our opinion this machine looks better than common widcats:)

Some of the trees on the market square were 'dressed' in lights during the Christmas, until February. This photo was taken some time ago but we think it is worth to show it now:)

The church inside

Some of you were interested in how does the church in yesterday's photo look like inside. Here is the answer:). The three photos were taken after today's Holy Mass.
It's important to underline that the photos were taken few minutes after the mass. Don't think that our churches are so empty. Especially in Nowy Sacz, in southern Poland:). During the mass the church was full of people, as always on Sundays and other holidays.

February 14, 2009

The reflection

These buildings are situated in the centre of Nowy Sacz, on the Szwedzka Street (Swedish Street). It crosses the main street of the town - Jagiellonska Street. The church of railwaymen

This church was built in 1899 in the new district of Nowy Sacz. The development of this part of the town was connected with the popularization of the railway in our region. Mainly railwaymen with their families lived in this district of Nowy Sacz. This church was built for this community, this is why it is called 'Railway Church'.Not far away from the church there is also the railway station and the company which produces and repairs trains.

The 'Carpe Diem' tenement

This green tenement is situated in the center of Nowy Sacz, on one of the eight streets which go to the market square. This one is Dunajewskiego Street. In this tenement there is the pizza parlour called 'Carpe Diem'. Just next to it there is a shop with such cosmetic things as colourful soap with different patterns, pretty wrapped towels, set of shower gels, etc. If you do not know what to buy for a gift, you can find something there.

Falcon

In today's photos there is the building of the Malopolian Culture Center 'Falcon' (Malopolskie Centrum Kultury 'Sokol'). The name 'Falcon' comes from the name of the Polish Gymnastic Society 'Falcon' (Polskie Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne 'Sokol') which was established in 1867 in Lviv. In Nowy Sacz it came into being in 1887 when the south part of Poland was under the domination of the Austria-Hungary Dual Monarchy. The society promotes the value of sport, health as well as moral values.
The building of Nowy Sacz's 'Falcon' was thoroughly rebuilded at the turn of the century (1993 - 2003).

The old and the new

Today's weather was awful. Really gloomy and gray time. This is why we tried to take a photo which is full of dynamism. In the Nowy Sacz's railway station the old and the new have met.
The old is the type of train which you can see in Poland frequently. This one shuttles from Cracow to Krynica. The new one is modern Rapid Municipal Train from Warsaw ('Szybka Kolej Miejska'). Probably this modern train will be repaired here because Rapid Municipal Train (SKM) is a client of Nowy Sacz's company 'NEWAG' (it produces, repairs and modernizes trains).

February 3, 2009

Evening in the center

In today's photo there are buildings in the center of the town, just behind the townhall. One of these tenements is full of shops, it is called 'Rynek 13' ('Town market 13'). This name is because of the number of the building.
The photo was taken last week. We suppose there would be less snowy photos next days because there is thaw in Nowy Sacz since yesterday.

February 2, 2009

The park in winter

This is the most popular park in our town. It is situated in the center of Nowy Sacz, about ten minutes walking from the town market. The park is called 'Planty'. For all year it is place where people come to relax, walk, talk with friends and feed pigeons:) There are also two cafes.

The photo was taken last week.

The last days of Christmas decorations

At the beginning of February Christmas decorations dissapear from streets of Polish cities. This big bulb was an element of decoration of Nowy Sacz's townmarket.
There is also small wooden angel on the lantern. For all year there are four such angels in the townmarket (in every corner).

The photo was taken on Thursday.
