John Paul II on the market square

In todays's photo there is the monument of the Pope John Paul II. It is just next to the townhall.

The monument was bared 16 October 2005.

A bit original, the Pope as a dark figure against the bright building in the background. His friendly face is still there, though. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting statue...the flowing robes give it a formative expression...but why is it next to the town hall?

I suppose it's because of that the authorities of the town wanted to choose the noblest and the most worthy place for the statue of the most distinguished Pole of our times.
I agree that this particular place is arguable:)

Thanks for the info. I wondered because we're having some struggles with the church/state issue here. Actually, considering the fact he is, "the most distinguished Pole of our times," it is most appropriate from any point of view.

A most famous Pole - I like the statue & it's placement next to the townhall seems regal (hmmm, government, church, rulers). The other famous Pole that comes to mind is Lech Wałęsa.

That is a good picture, and a fine statue. Is that a Christmas tree at the bottom, or is it just my old eyes playing up?!

No, it's not a Christmas tree, just ordinary tree:)
